Roo
Welcome back to the Astro cast. Oh.
00;01;01;28 - 00;01;10;28
Roo
I'm your host, Roo. And today is Wednesday, November 5th, 2025.
00;01;11;02 - 00;01;20;03
Roo
Oh! The full beaver moon is upon us.
00;01;20;06 - 00;01;29;11
Roo
I, normally don't go in for all that. Naming the moon each month stuff. But.
00;01;29;14 - 00;01;34;15
Roo
You can say no to a beaver moon. Certainly not me.
00;01;34;17 - 00;01;48;00
Roo
Hope everybody's been doing well. I certainly have. We've had a, few clear nights this week, which I'm quite happy to report. It looks like, tonight's going to be clear. Tomorrow night's going to be clear. And perhaps one.
00;01;48;00 - 00;01;55;20
Roo
More. So, it's just a shame that it's right at full moon, because it's, you know, not the great greatest.
00;01;55;20 - 00;01;56;13
Roo
Time to be.
00;01;56;13 - 00;01;58;19
Roo
Doing, deep sky, imaging.
00;01;58;19 - 00;02;03;18
Roo
But luckily, with, good filters, we are still able to make things work.
00;02;03;18 - 00;02;07;26
Roo
So I would like to, welcome back.
00;02;07;28 - 00;02;34;04
Roo
The great Nebula in. Oh, Ryan. And after the, recent change back to standard time for many of us here living in the United States. It essentially rolled the clock back an hour or so. It gets dark around 5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time here, in North Carolina. I've got friends that live further up north and New Hampshire, and it's getting dark for them at like 430 in the afternoon.
00;02;34;07 - 00;02;38;01
Roo
Longer nights, with, you know, earlier rising.
00;02;38;08 - 00;02;38;13
Roo
Of.
00;02;38;13 - 00;02;42;22
Roo
The Pleiades and followed by Orion. So, you know, if you're out.
00;02;42;22 - 00;02;43;10
Roo
At.
00;02;43;13 - 00;02;46;18
Roo
11:00 now, you can see Orion rising in the east.
00;02;46;18 - 00;02;48;10
Roo
Which is just awesome.
00;02;48;12 - 00;02;57;04
Roo
And I have taken advantage of that. So I actually, started imaging Orion for the first time this year. So I was really torn.
00;02;57;04 - 00;02;58;08
Roo
On.
00;02;58;10 - 00;03;10;29
Roo
How I wanted to go about framing this up, because now that I have a 2600 Macpro, it being an Aps-c sensor, when I pair that up with my.
00;03;11;06 - 00;03;11;21
Roo
Best.
00;03;11;21 - 00;03;18;29
Roo
Telescope, in terms of image quality, that'd be the NASCAR SKA 55 quintuplets. Astro graph. That's a.
00;03;18;29 - 00;03;20;21
Roo
Mouthful.
00;03;20;23 - 00;03;22;28
Roo
It gives a, pretty large field of view.
00;03;22;28 - 00;03;26;18
Roo
And in fact, if you want, you can put the.
00;03;26;20 - 00;03;48;10
Roo
Flame and Horsehead Nebula on one side of the frame and the Orion Nebula on the other side of the frame. However, I don't really like the way that that frames up because they both kind of look squished into the corners when you go that route. So I just I'm not a big fan of that. So what I ended up doing was centering it.
00;03;48;10 - 00;03;50;04
Roo
Right on Orion.
00;03;50;06 - 00;04;12;04
Roo
And it's such a wide field that you end up being able to capture all that incredible, signal that's all around Orion. And if you've had the pleasure of imaging Orion for, you know, a decently long amount of integration, and it doesn't take much to be clear. Then you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.
00;04;12;04 - 00;04;13;20
Roo
And, you know.
00;04;13;22 - 00;04;23;09
Roo
There's something to be said, for HDR compositions when it comes to Orion, we want to, you know, get better and.
00;04;23;09 - 00;04;24;25
Roo
Better each year.
00;04;24;25 - 00;04;43;24
Roo
As we shoot, you know, some of the same objects over and over again. And last year, I did nder composition on Orion and I was I was pretty happy with the results. I'd be happy to, share them on the Facebook page. In fact, I'll make a note of it now, so I remember to share later.
00;04;43;27 - 00;04;44;28
Roo
But I want to, see.
00;04;44;28 - 00;04;48;29
Roo
What I can do better. You know, we should always challenge ourselves.
00;04;49;01 - 00;04;49;28
Roo
To see if.
00;04;49;28 - 00;04;50;22
Roo
We can do a better.
00;04;50;22 - 00;04;51;25
Roo
Job.
00;04;51;28 - 00;04;58;12
Roo
With the same or similar tools. Now, obviously, I've got a better camera now than I had last year.
00;04;58;14 - 00;04;59;16
Roo
But it's.
00;04;59;16 - 00;05;21;11
Roo
Not that big of a difference when you get down to brass tacks. As far as, you know, the 2600 versus the 294, I've essentially got a higher megapixel count and a larger frame. But I would think the overall image quality is going to be pretty similar on the same telescope if you're, you know, using similar methods and similar exposure times, etc..
00;05;21;11 - 00;05;24;09
Roo
So, you know, one of the things.
00;05;24;13 - 00;05;25;14
Roo
That you're going to want to.
00;05;25;14 - 00;05;27;15
Roo
Do is make sure.
00;05;27;19 - 00;05;32;01
Roo
That you take some very, very short exposures and you don't have to do.
00;05;32;01 - 00;05;33;16
Roo
It for.
00;05;33;18 - 00;05;47;14
Roo
You know, four hours worth of very short exposures. But I would recommend getting like, you know, 30 minutes to 1 hour worth of short exposures. And when I say short exposures, I mean like legitimately one second or shorter.
00;05;47;16 - 00;05;51;02
Roo
So what you can do is when you.
00;05;51;04 - 00;06;05;08
Roo
You know, pan on over to Orion, go into your preview screen. If you're using the ASI air, or you can preview and Nena as well, whatever tool you are using and, you know, start with a ten second exposure.
00;06;05;11 - 00;06;07;24
Roo
And see what the.
00;06;07;24 - 00;06;19;17
Roo
Trapezium region looks like in the trapezium region is. If you look right into the center of the core, you will see, a three, like a triangle of stars. And they were first identified.
00;06;19;28 - 00;06;22;23
Roo
By none other than Galileo himself.
00;06;23;24 - 00;06;31;14
Roo
And those are the three that tend to get blown out, by most people who are new to astrophotography.
00;06;31;15 - 00;06;34;26
Roo
And you can always tell, a.
00;06;34;26 - 00;06;40;27
Roo
Beginner from an intermediate to advanced user by the Orion shot that.
00;06;40;27 - 00;06;41;20
Roo
They post.
00;06;41;20 - 00;06;54;16
Roo
And it's not the sound like an imaging snob. I'm not saying that if you blow out your core of the Orion, that it can't be a beautiful image. Of course it can be. Some of my favorite images don't show the trapezium region.
00;06;54;18 - 00;06;58;15
Roo
But if you want to challenge yourself and see if you.
00;06;58;15 - 00;07;03;13
Roo
Can do something that's a little bit more technically adept than what you did last.
00;07;03;13 - 00;07;04;16
Roo
Year, this is.
00;07;04;16 - 00;07;06;02
Roo
A great opportunity to.
00;07;06;02 - 00;07;06;27
Roo
Do that.
00;07;07;00 - 00;07;34;07
Roo
And like I say, start with a ten second exposure and then work your way up or down, more than likely down. Like for myself, I found actually a one second exposure was perfect. With the 2600, I have the gain set at 100, which I believe is medium. If you go into the ASI, your settings and just a one second exposure is able to, bring out that trap region quite well.
00;07;34;09 - 00;07;42;00
Roo
And I know that I can use the various tools that we have within Pix insight now.
00;07;42;02 - 00;07;43;05
Roo
To composite.
00;07;43;05 - 00;07;48;01
Roo
Those images together using masking and various other methods. And we're going to talk today a.
00;07;48;01 - 00;07;49;26
Roo
Little bit about.
00;07;49;28 - 00;08;03;03
Roo
Some of the newer tools that are available in Pix insight. And we actually, we got together last weekend as a group. So we're always talking in the discord.
00;08;03;07 - 00;08;04;20
Roo
And I would like to,
00;08;04;27 - 00;08;10;20
Roo
Take a moment and give a shout out to our newest member of the, the Astro cast family, and that'd be.
00;08;10;20 - 00;08;11;17
Roo
Jason.
00;08;11;19 - 00;08;15;23
Roo
Jason, thank you so much for joining the group. We're extremely happy to have you.
00;08;15;25 - 00;08;17;12
Roo
And, we got two.
00;08;17;12 - 00;08;28;07
Roo
Floridians on board now, so Chris and Jason, both from Florida. They both started talking. I think they're probably going to get together at some point and, spend the night or two imaging, but.
00;08;28;10 - 00;08;29;00
Roo
We, we.
00;08;29;07 - 00;08;35;00
Roo
We got together as a group on last Saturday night and we started talking.
00;08;35;00 - 00;08;36;24
Roo
About, City.
00;08;36;24 - 00;08;42;25
Roo
Astro because City Astro is just, you know, legendary in terms of pix, insight plug ins.
00;08;42;25 - 00;08;47;18
Roo
And they have a whole lot of them, that you can use.
00;08;47;21 - 00;08;50;11
Roo
But we were also talking about cosmic.
00;08;50;11 - 00;08;51;09
Roo
Photons.
00;08;51;09 - 00;08;53;10
Roo
Which is another, group.
00;08;53;15 - 00;08;54;00
Roo
Of.
00;08;54;00 - 00;08;59;25
Roo
Pix insight plugins that you can use, that are really, really good.
00;08;59;28 - 00;09;03;01
Roo
And I actually I had two.
00;09;03;01 - 00;09;16;04
Roo
Cosmic photons plugins that I had and don't even ask me how I came across them. I don't know, might have been Reddit or Google, who knows, but I didn't realize that, they have an entire website where they list.
00;09;16;09 - 00;09;17;14
Roo
The,
00;09;17;16 - 00;09;23;15
Roo
Repository address for each and every one of their plug ins, very similar to how City Astro does.
00;09;23;17 - 00;09;24;28
Roo
So what I did.
00;09;24;28 - 00;09;38;25
Roo
Was I basically went through and I copied every single one of those to a document, and then I went into pix Insight and opened up my repository updates. And then one by one I went through and added.
00;09;38;25 - 00;09;39;09
Roo
Each.
00;09;39;09 - 00;09;40;04
Roo
And every one.
00;09;40;04 - 00;09;40;26
Roo
Of those.
00;09;41;03 - 00;09;44;04
Roo
To my repository. And now I've got.
00;09;44;07 - 00;09;45;26
Roo
Quite a few new.
00;09;45;29 - 00;09;51;20
Roo
Plugins, processes, scripts, within Pix insight that I'm able to use.
00;09;51;20 - 00;09;56;05
Roo
And I'd love to share those with you guys. So you also.
00;09;56;05 - 00;10;16;06
Roo
Can use them and we can talk about, some of the really cool ways that you can use them, including some of the masking tools, which are just phenomenal from cosmic photons. Friend of the show, parish, actually told me about the, color masking tool that they have, and he told me that it was it was really well done the way they implemented it.
00;10;16;06 - 00;10;27;12
Roo
And I had pulled in my, first Knights Orion data, the three minute sub exposures that I was doing from the first night. And I had about five hours of data.
00;10;27;14 - 00;10;29;03
Roo
And, yeah.
00;10;29;03 - 00;10;53;01
Roo
I went in there and man, it's it is really cool how it works and it's very effective. So masking is something that I've always struggled with. And pix insight. I know masks. I have used Photoshop for years and years. But I've always had trouble getting masks to work. Right. And to blend in properly. In pix insight.
00;10;53;04 - 00;11;00;21
Roo
And I really feel like, the cosmic photons, color masking tools really give me some advantages that I.
00;11;00;21 - 00;11;04;23
Roo
Just didn't have before. So what we'll do.
00;11;04;23 - 00;11;06;16
Roo
Is I will actually.
00;11;06;16 - 00;11;07;29
Roo
Put all.
00;11;07;29 - 00;11;21;20
Roo
Of the various, tools that we're discussing today in the show notes. So I've already got pretty much all of them listed out in a notepad file. So I'm just going to copy all of those over. So that way you'll be able.
00;11;21;20 - 00;11;22;19
Roo
To bring.
00;11;22;19 - 00;11;36;12
Roo
Them in. Depicts insight yourself. And I'll just quickly walk you through how you can install them, just in case you've never installed, a plug in to your repository within Pix Insight, I would imagine most of you have.
00;11;36;15 - 00;11;38;15
Roo
But just in case you haven't, what.
00;11;38;15 - 00;11;44;27
Roo
You want to do is open up pix insight. And then at the, the top of the screen, go over to the very last.
00;11;46;07 - 00;11;54;09
Roo
Bar up there that says resources. And then you're going to want to scroll down to updates and select Manage Repositories.
00;11;54;12 - 00;11;56;13
Roo
And you should see a list.
00;11;56;13 - 00;11;59;10
Roo
Of various Pix insight repositories that are in there by.
00;11;59;10 - 00;11;59;26
Roo
Default.
00;12;00;05 - 00;12;04;03
Roo
And if you have any others installed, they will also be listed there. Like for.
00;12;04;03 - 00;12;05;17
Roo
Example, if you've.
00;12;05;17 - 00;12;11;15
Roo
Got blur exterminator or star exterminator, those types of things, they'll be listed here as well.
00;12;11;17 - 00;12;14;12
Roo
And what you can do is just hit the add button.
00;12;14;17 - 00;12;28;10
Roo
Now, unfortunately you do have to do this one at a time. I really wish Pix Insight would add the availability of, putting in multiple URLs at once, because it's a bit of a pain when you've got like a dozen that you want to add in them one by one.
00;12;28;12 - 00;12;29;13
Roo
But just,
00;12;29;19 - 00;12;30;26
Roo
Copy and paste.
00;12;30;26 - 00;12;32;03
Roo
Each, full.
00;12;32;03 - 00;12;33;09
Roo
URL, including.
00;12;33;09 - 00;12;34;19
Roo
The https.
00;12;34;20 - 00;12;48;06
Roo
Part, and paste it in there and then press okay. And then all you have to do is go back to resources updates and click on check for updates. It'll take just a moment to, download.
00;12;48;08 - 00;12;49;04
Roo
Updated.
00;12;49;04 - 00;12;59;27
Roo
Repository information, and it will tell you if it has anything that it needs to download. And then the final step after it has downloaded all that info.
00;13;00;06 - 00;13;00;19
Roo
Is to.
00;13;00;19 - 00;13;03;09
Roo
Simply restart Pix insight. So you just.
00;13;03;09 - 00;13;04;14
Roo
Need to close it.
00;13;04;17 - 00;13;20;00
Roo
And after you close it, it'll pop up and say you have updates pending. Would you like to install them? Click on yes and then when it's done installing them you just reopen Pix Insight and then anything that you have added should then be available either in.
00;13;20;00 - 00;13;21;15
Roo
Scripts.
00;13;21;17 - 00;13;33;16
Roo
Usually like for example, if it's a city astro script, it'll be under City Astro and then cosmic Photons has its own folder under scripts as well. So hopefully that will be,
00;13;33;18 - 00;13;35;14
Roo
Helpful to you.
00;13;35;16 - 00;13;43;29
Roo
Certainly has been for me because like, I say, there are so many different ones available and all of them really are great in their own ways.
00;13;44;02 - 00;13;44;25
Roo
One of the,
00;13;44;28 - 00;13;54;22
Roo
Other things that I just want to briefly mention in pix insight that I've been using, a lot more often, in terms of masking.
00;13;54;25 - 00;13;58;01
Roo
It's it's a simple tool, but it is just.
00;13;58;01 - 00;13;58;24
Roo
Incredibly.
00;13;58;24 - 00;14;05;12
Roo
Effective. And it is the range selection tool. So if you go into,
00;14;05;15 - 00;14;07;11
Roo
Processes and go to all.
00;14;07;11 - 00;14;09;27
Roo
Processes and then just go.
00;14;09;27 - 00;14;14;11
Roo
Over to the bars and scroll down until you find range selection.
00;14;14;14 - 00;14;14;24
Roo
This is.
00;14;14;24 - 00;14;17;13
Roo
A really powerful tool for creating.
00;14;17;13 - 00;14;19;00
Roo
Masks that will.
00;14;19;00 - 00;14;35;06
Roo
Allow you to basically find the range of luminance that you're looking for. So if you check lightness and then you select an upper and lower limit, especially with something like the Orion Nebula, like, for example, I am wanting to.
00;14;35;09 - 00;14;37;13
Roo
Tweak all of that.
00;14;37;15 - 00;14;45;13
Roo
Signal in the background and really make that sing, but obviously I don't want to stretch all of the curves at the same time.
00;14;45;13 - 00;14;46;07
Roo
Because.
00;14;46;09 - 00;15;15;16
Roo
If I really bring out all that hot signal in the background the way that I want to, I'm going to end up completely blowing out the core of Orion and a lot more honestly, because you really do got, stretch it quite a bit in order to get it where you want it. Whereas if you pull up this range selection tool and then change your lower limit to like 0.44, for example, on the Orion Nebula, you'll quickly realize, wait a minute, I can mask.
00;15;15;16 - 00;15;17;03
Roo
Out all of the.
00;15;17;03 - 00;15;20;01
Roo
Area in Orion and then click the invert.
00;15;20;01 - 00;15;21;04
Roo
Button.
00;15;21;06 - 00;15;37;15
Roo
And then all of a sudden, all the white area is where the hot signal is. So all that red in the background that you're wanting to bring out. After you do that, you can just click the square and that will create the mask. And once you have a mask created in pix inside, all you need to.
00;15;37;15 - 00;15;38;16
Roo
Do is.
00;15;38;16 - 00;15;48;06
Roo
Actually drag it right below the name of whatever image file it is that you're working with. So like if you're working with a starless image of Orion, for example.
00;15;48;08 - 00;15;48;19
Roo
You would.
00;15;48;19 - 00;15;52;18
Roo
Drag it right underneath where it says starless in the top left hand corner.
00;15;52;25 - 00;15;53;02
Roo
Of.
00;15;53;02 - 00;15;53;15
Roo
The image.
00;15;53;15 - 00;15;54;05
Roo
File.
00;15;54;07 - 00;16;11;26
Roo
And that will apply the mask directly to the image, and you'll be able to see the red area. And then you can open up your curves tool. You can even, hit preview whenever you have the curves tool open or gaffs if you want to. Do, you know, generalized hyperbolic stretching. It works there as well.
00;16;11;29 - 00;16;12;10
Roo
It's just.
00;16;12;10 - 00;16;19;21
Roo
It's a really, really handy tool. And I cannot recommend it enough. It really has allowed me.
00;16;19;23 - 00;16;20;08
Roo
To.
00;16;20;09 - 00;16;25;28
Roo
Bring out that signal a lot more. And, and what you can do using that.
00;16;25;28 - 00;16;27;26
Roo
Tool specifically.
00;16;27;29 - 00;16;32;11
Roo
Is you can start by masking off pretty much.
00;16;32;11 - 00;16;32;26
Roo
All.
00;16;32;26 - 00;16;40;13
Roo
Of the main area around the Great Nebula and Orion and the, the Running Man Nebula off to the side.
00;16;40;14 - 00;16;40;26
Roo
Okay.
00;16;41;02 - 00;16;49;28
Roo
That's very easy to do when you're doing the range selection, because you'll be able to easily see, okay, that's obviously the Orion Nebula. And that's obviously the Running Man.
00;16;50;05 - 00;16;51;01
Roo
Is is two big.
00;16;51;01 - 00;16;56;05
Roo
Shapes that are going to be right in the middle of your frame there. But after you've masked.
00;16;56;05 - 00;16;58;19
Roo
Those off, create a second.
00;16;58;19 - 00;17;08;05
Roo
Mask using the range tool. Make some further adjustments and then make it smaller and then make it smaller again. And what you want to do is make.
00;17;08;05 - 00;17;09;05
Roo
You know, I don't know.
00;17;09;05 - 00;17;09;17
Roo
3.
00;17;09;17 - 00;17;11;12
Roo
To 5 mask until.
00;17;11;12 - 00;17;14;04
Roo
You get into the core or the trap.
00;17;14;04 - 00;17;15;09
Roo
Is and that's.
00;17;15;09 - 00;17;20;04
Roo
That very, very bright region. And if you layer this correctly.
00;17;20;06 - 00;17;22;24
Roo
And you stretch each mask.
00;17;22;24 - 00;17;28;15
Roo
Individually as you process the image, what you'll find is you'll be able to.
00;17;28;15 - 00;17;29;28
Roo
Match up.
00;17;30;00 - 00;17;34;05
Roo
The lightness. So it doesn't look like one of these was clearly masked.
00;17;34;05 - 00;17;34;19
Roo
Off.
00;17;34;19 - 00;17;52;06
Roo
And the other one is sticking out like a sore thumb. You know what I'm talking about when it looks like you know, someone's like, cut out a piece of paper and there's the Orion Nebula, and then everything else around it just looks out of place. You can really blend them together quite well. If you, you know, introduce some blurring and smoothing with the.
00;17;52;06 - 00;17;53;08
Roo
Tool and.
00;17;53;08 - 00;18;07;29
Roo
Then make multiple masks so you can make it smaller and smaller as you approach that core. And that really will open up a lot of different avenues for you to bring out that trapezium region, which is ultimately what your goal is.
00;18;07;29 - 00;18;09;04
Roo
So I'll make.
00;18;09;04 - 00;18;17;25
Roo
It a challenge for, all of the listeners this year if you're, you know, in the Northern hemisphere and you're shooting Orion, I challenge you.
00;18;17;25 - 00;18;22;21
Roo
To make an HDR composite of Orion.
00;18;22;24 - 00;18;42;21
Roo
You don't have to do, you know, 20 different exposure times. A lot of people will say, you know, you need to do one second exposures and five second exposures. And and I've been guilty of this, too. You know, last year when I did mine, I think I did five separate exposures. But you really don't need to do that if you mask properly.
00;18;42;23 - 00;18;52;05
Roo
You just need to make sure that you've got at least one exposure that shows all of the trapezium region. And the more delicate details clearly.
00;18;52;07 - 00;18;53;09
Roo
Which is easy to get.
00;18;53;09 - 00;19;02;12
Roo
With a single one second exposure, and then mask and blend that properly and pix insight. If you can do that, you will end up.
00;19;02;14 - 00;19;02;25
Roo
With a.
00;19;02;25 - 00;19;07;23
Roo
Really, really nice image, I can promise you that. So I challenge you to do it.
00;19;07;25 - 00;19;10;06
Roo
If you, pull it off.
00;19;10;06 - 00;19;11;29
Roo
And you want to let me see it, you can.
00;19;11;29 - 00;19;13;09
Roo
Obviously.
00;19;13;11 - 00;19;26;24
Roo
Email it to me, email me a link. You can tag me on social media. We're getting more and more, interactions over on the Facebook page. The link is in the show notes. Please check that out. One other favor I want to ask you guys, if you don't mind.
00;19;26;26 - 00;19;29;03
Roo
Spotify is by.
00;19;29;03 - 00;19;31;13
Roo
Far our most popular platform.
00;19;31;15 - 00;19;32;04
Roo
And one.
00;19;32;04 - 00;19;32;29
Roo
Of the things that I have.
00;19;32;29 - 00;19;37;05
Roo
Noticed is just leaving like a,
00;19;37;07 - 00;19;48;01
Roo
Five star review or whatever star review you think the Astro cast deserves. Really does seem to increase engagement and send the algorithm out to the masses.
00;19;48;07 - 00;19;50;11
Roo
So if you haven't yet, if you.
00;19;50;11 - 00;20;07;25
Roo
Wouldn't mind just, you know, tapping on the Astro cast and tapping the five stars beside it or whatever you would like. Leave us a review for it. And you don't even have to write anything. Just literally tap the stars and that'll bring in more listeners to, help or the show. And it's an easy, free way that we can do that.
00;20;07;25 - 00;20;08;18
Roo
Which,
00;20;08;20 - 00;20;14;04
Roo
Makes a huge difference to us in the long run. So thank you. So much for, all of your.
00;20;14;04 - 00;20;16;27
Roo
Support, as always.
00;20;16;29 - 00;20;33;11
Roo
It's funny, I was actually outside, recording on Monday night. I was recording as I was starting to image Orion, and I was out there with the DJI mics, and I figured I would do like a half under the stars, half in the studio type episode.
00;20;33;13 - 00;20;34;29
Roo
And it was going well.
00;20;34;29 - 00;20;56;08
Roo
And I was talking about, I don't know, I was talking about setting up the telescope and getting everything running and giving some tips on plate, solving and using the preview screen effectively in the ASI air. And, as I was doing all that, I heard like something rustling in the bushes, on the side of my yard, which pretty much never happens.
00;20;56;08 - 00;20;59;23
Roo
Like it's always quiet out there and it scared the living.
00;20;59;25 - 00;21;02;09
Roo
Crap out of me.
00;21;02;12 - 00;21;16;28
Roo
So like on the recorder, you can hear me saying, like, what the heck was that? And I get really, really quiet. And then I'm like, all right, all right, okay, I'll get back to you guys. And I stopped the recording and I tried to start it back up again a few minutes later, but.
00;21;17;00 - 00;21;17;12
Roo
I was.
00;21;17;12 - 00;21;21;26
Roo
Clearly uneasy and it just wasn't working. So I said, okay, well, we'll scrap.
00;21;21;26 - 00;21;25;15
Roo
The, the outdoor show for this week.
00;21;25;15 - 00;21;27;20
Roo
And just, do it all in the studio.
00;21;27;20 - 00;21;28;11
Roo
But it.
00;21;28;11 - 00;21;36;26
Roo
Was funny. You probably needed to be there, but it was something else. I also, unfortunately, I ended up breaking my Iva dry.
00;21;37;02 - 00;21;37;13
Roo
Which.
00;21;37;13 - 00;21;48;14
Roo
Is the, the desiccant device that, Parrish recommended to me. They work so, so good, by the way. I'll put a link to them in the show notes, basically. It's.
00;21;48;14 - 00;21;49;26
Roo
A little box.
00;21;49;26 - 00;21;51;02
Roo
That contains desiccant.
00;21;51;02 - 00;21;51;19
Roo
Beads.
00;21;51;26 - 00;22;06;16
Roo
So if you have a situation like me or you've got a pier outside that you keep your telescope on, and you cover it up with something like a Tesla Gizmos three, six, five cover, you still are going to have humidity. Get underneath that cover.
00;22;06;19 - 00;22;07;02
Roo
And.
00;22;07;02 - 00;22;09;28
Roo
Moisture buildup and you don't want that, obviously.
00;22;10;01 - 00;22;10;28
Roo
So if you put.
00;22;10;28 - 00;22;24;23
Roo
One of these little Eva dry boxes in there, it has all these desiccant balls that can absorb moisture. And then what happens is once they're, you know, fully saturated, they turn to a green color.
00;22;24;25 - 00;22;27;17
Roo
And then you remove it.
00;22;27;19 - 00;22;30;18
Roo
And you go inside and you plug it in to an outlet, and it.
00;22;30;18 - 00;22;32;08
Roo
Slowly heats the.
00;22;32;08 - 00;22;47;05
Roo
Desiccant balls and dries them back out. And then you can reuse it. So it works really, really great. I absolutely love it. I think they're only like $15, so I highly recommend them. I also put a link to those in the show notes.
00;22;47;08 - 00;22;47;23
Roo
But.
00;22;47;23 - 00;22;51;19
Roo
I broke my first one this week, so I was taking the.
00;22;52;14 - 00;23;09;04
Roo
The cover off the tele gizmos cover off because I wanted to, I can't remember what I was on. I was on something with them out, and, I just dropped it and it slapped right onto the concrete and cracked right down the middle. They are, you know, cheap plastic, basically. Just kind of thin plastic, but they're very inexpensive.
00;23;09;04 - 00;23;11;01
Roo
So not the end of the world. I just.
00;23;11;04 - 00;23;11;17
Roo
Ordered.
00;23;11;17 - 00;23;18;09
Roo
A new one, and we will just, keep it moving like we always do. You know, guys, I want to apologize if.
00;23;18;09 - 00;23;19;15
Roo
The first.
00;23;19;15 - 00;23;21;17
Roo
Ten minutes or so of the show.
00;23;21;17 - 00;23;25;14
Roo
This week was overly busy, so.
00;23;25;16 - 00;23;39;09
Roo
I figured out on my new sure microphone, there are actually little switches on the back of the microphone, two of them that control frequency response, and I did not have them.
00;23;39;09 - 00;23;40;12
Roo
Set to.
00;23;40;12 - 00;23;42;14
Roo
Flat frequency, which I really.
00;23;42;14 - 00;23;43;08
Roo
Should have.
00;23;43;13 - 00;23;46;01
Roo
Because I do all of my work on the audio in.
00;23;46;01 - 00;23;46;27
Roo
Post.
00;23;46;29 - 00;23;55;26
Roo
I don't need anything but a nice flat sound coming out of the mic, which is what we have now, and it should sound infinitely better than it did for the first ten minutes. And this is.
00;23;55;26 - 00;23;56;26
Roo
How we will keep it.
00;23;57;02 - 00;24;00;12
Roo
Moving forward. So hopefully you won't have to deal with any of that.
00;24;00;15 - 00;24;03;07
Roo
Overly bass type sound anymore.
00;24;03;07 - 00;24;13;21
Roo
Especially if you're like me and you got a subwoofer in your vehicle. It booming every time that I speak. So my apologies, if that was the case. So in other news.
00;24;13;21 - 00;24;14;13
Roo
SVP.
00;24;14;13 - 00;24;31;23
Roo
Boney has really been upping their game, with hardware this year. So they kind of got famous based on their, affordable telescopes. So they originally came out with the scope that I owned the first refractor that I ever had, in fact, which is.
00;24;31;23 - 00;24;35;06
Roo
The 7080 Eddie, doublet.
00;24;35;08 - 00;25;00;21
Roo
Telescope. And they've done very, very well. They've come out with, better designs over the years and higher quality optics. And honestly, I think they're right up there with, any other of the more budget friendly, refractor as far as quality is concerned. I can also tell you, that for things like, you know, accessories, in your, telescope, you really can't beat a mic.
00;25;00;23 - 00;25;01;04
Roo
For,
00;25;01;11 - 00;25;12;15
Roo
The telescope filter drawer. I know I've raved about that a million times, but it's so much better than the zero one. And it comes with an extra drawer, which, the Z1 just does not.
00;25;12;23 - 00;25;13;08
Roo
I was actually.
00;25;13;08 - 00;25;17;07
Roo
Looking on Amazon. They had a two pack of those going for $78.
00;25;17;09 - 00;25;19;10
Roo
So you get two of the,
00;25;19;16 - 00;25;22;14
Roo
Filter drawers in for total.
00;25;22;17 - 00;25;23;13
Roo
Or. Yeah, two.
00;25;23;13 - 00;25;27;24
Roo
Of the filter drawers and for total, you know, slide end filter drawers that you would get.
00;25;27;24 - 00;25;28;24
Roo
So a two.
00;25;28;24 - 00;25;39;25
Roo
Pack for $78, that's cheaper than, I think a single zwo one. I believe they're like 80 bucks a pop. But they've been they've been releasing some other things as well. Notably, they came out.
00;25;39;25 - 00;25;40;25
Roo
With a.
00;25;40;28 - 00;25;45;05
Roo
Power adapter, not too long ago. So if you've got a situation like a lot of us.
00;25;45;05 - 00;25;46;11
Roo
Do, where.
00;25;46;11 - 00;25;50;12
Roo
Maybe you're running do heaters over USB power.
00;25;50;12 - 00;25;51;12
Roo
Or you've.
00;25;51;12 - 00;26;05;25
Roo
Just run out of USB ports on your device, whether it be, you know, an AC air or another similar device, and you need more USB power, or you just want to clean up, your cables because you've got way too much cable.
00;26;05;25 - 00;26;06;17
Roo
Mess.
00;26;06;19 - 00;26;07;09
Roo
They actually.
00;26;07;09 - 00;26;09;24
Roo
Have a USB hub now.
00;26;09;24 - 00;26;11;16
Roo
And it's really affordable. It's only 60.
00;26;11;16 - 00;26;13;00
Roo
Bucks.
00;26;13;03 - 00;26;16;12
Roo
It works great. It's got Type-C, it's got.
00;26;16;14 - 00;26;16;25
Roo
Two.
00;26;16;25 - 00;26;21;07
Roo
USB, 3.1, ports on it and a 2.0 port as.
00;26;21;07 - 00;26;22;14
Roo
Well.
00;26;22;16 - 00;27;01;22
Roo
It's a power USB hub, which is quite nice. Multiple mounting points. It's got, M4 and quarter inch. So basically your major mounting points that you would have on any scope. And then it also has, four DC power outputs. I'm sorry, six DC power outputs. So you're talking about a device, that's, you know, significantly more affordable than any of the other power management solution, things that you would find on the market, from some of the other companies that are out there, for 60 bucks, you know, in fact, the one that I'm looking at right now is on sale 10% off.
00;27;01;24 - 00;27;19;13
Roo
So I'll link to that in the show notes if you want to check it out. So SV Moni actually sells most of their stuff on Amazon. It's one of the few things I can recommend buying on Amazon. And this in particular, I mean what let's see. 123 I'm counting four, five.
00;27;19;13 - 00;27;21;05
Roo
Six USB.
00;27;21;05 - 00;27;48;19
Roo
Ports and six DC out power ports. I mean, that's just unheard of. For $60. So yeah, if you're looking for something, to take care of five volt and 12 volt power, look no further than the SV Boni, USB hub. Now, I will also say, though, the reason that I brought it up is they apparently are working on an auto focuser.
00;27;48;19 - 00;27;50;02
Roo
So I saw.
00;27;50;02 - 00;27;55;23
Roo
Someone in the, group chat earlier on the Patreon. Actually post.
00;27;55;23 - 00;27;57;15
Roo
A photo of the.
00;27;57;20 - 00;27;59;02
Roo
SV Boni.
00;27;59;05 - 00;28;03;00
Roo
EAF, and that could be.
00;28;03;00 - 00;28;09;03
Roo
Very interesting indeed. So I'm looking at a photo of this right now. It's,
00;28;09;05 - 00;28;09;18
Roo
It looks.
00;28;09;18 - 00;28;14;06
Roo
To be, I mean, it's kind of hard to judge scale from a photo because it's got just a white background.
00;28;14;06 - 00;28;15;00
Roo
But it does.
00;28;15;00 - 00;28;15;29
Roo
Look very nice.
00;28;15;29 - 00;28;20;12
Roo
So it has a, clutch switch on it, which is.
00;28;20;14 - 00;28;33;18
Roo
Very, very nice. I assume that allows you to turn off the clutch so you can unlock it and manually turn your zoom, which can be just like hugely advantageous in so many situations. I'm thinking.
00;28;33;25 - 00;28;34;19
Roo
Specifically.
00;28;34;19 - 00;28;37;23
Roo
Of all the times with my Rokinon 135.
00;28;37;25 - 00;28;38;04
Roo
Where.
00;28;38;04 - 00;28;41;07
Roo
I had to loosen up everything to make an adjustment.
00;28;41;07 - 00;28;43;08
Roo
If I could have just unlocked the.
00;28;43;08 - 00;28;48;28
Roo
Clutch, I could have manually done it myself. It connects via type C, and it also.
00;28;48;28 - 00;28;50;11
Roo
Has a, a.
00;28;50;11 - 00;29;00;17
Roo
Temperature probe plug in. So you can, you know, refocus whenever the temperature changes, which is what most folks do. It looks like it's, in development now, and they're.
00;29;00;17 - 00;29;01;05
Roo
Still.
00;29;01;06 - 00;29;12;02
Roo
Taking suggestions for features. It looks like somebody just posted it on Facebook, based on this photo. But, yeah, that's that's very exciting. I keep wondering.
00;29;12;05 - 00;29;12;13
Roo
If.
00;29;12;16 - 00;29;22;11
Roo
SV Boni is going to come out with a mount. That's what I'm wanting to know, because I feel like they could really blow the doors off.
00;29;22;11 - 00;29;23;10
Roo
Of.
00;29;23;13 - 00;29;27;13
Roo
The equatorial mount game, like, especially harmonic drives.
00;29;27;15 - 00;29;29;07
Roo
Couldn't you just see SV.
00;29;29;07 - 00;29;56;22
Roo
Boni coming out with like, a 40 pound mount for like $800? Call me crazy, but I could just see them doing something like that, just based on their history and coming in at, you know, such a more affordable rate than so many of these other companies do. And, you know, I would certainly be first in line to try one of them, because everything that I've gotten from them so far has been really top notch quality.
00;29;56;22 - 00;30;01;23
Roo
Like I have no complaints whatsoever. My doublet telescope was great. I added the reducer.
00;30;01;23 - 00;30;02;08
Roo
On.
00;30;02;11 - 00;30;27;24
Roo
Even better. The filter drawer is awesome. The do heaters that I've gotten have been great. The dual narrowband filter that I got is great. I mean, they really don't make bad stuff, and it's all affordable, so I'm all about it. I think it's great competition. For the bigger, more expensive companies that are out there. And don't get me wrong, I'm glad those are around too, but I sure would love to see if we Boni,
00;30;27;27 - 00;30;28;05
Roo
Would.
00;30;28;05 - 00;30;45;05
Roo
Come out with a mount. I'm sure it's in development, or at least thinking about it. They certainly seem to be expanding in all directions. I mean, they definitely have, you know, planetary and deep sky cameras and guys, this probably be a good time to mention.
00;30;45;07 - 00;30;46;09
Roo
Like, don't.
00;30;46;09 - 00;30;47;22
Roo
Lock yourself in to.
00;30;47;22 - 00;30;48;13
Roo
Just.
00;30;48;20 - 00;30;58;04
Roo
Zwo. I know I'm one to talk because I use an AM3 and a 2600 MC Pro. I love zwo like don't get me wrong ASI.
00;30;58;07 - 00;30;58;23
Roo
They they.
00;30;58;23 - 00;31;03;00
Roo
Make great stuff. I love the ASI air, I love how convenient it is and.
00;31;03;06 - 00;31;04;03
Roo
It is great.
00;31;04;03 - 00;31;08;16
Roo
Quality stuff, but there's no reason anymore in this day and age.
00;31;08;19 - 00;31;11;02
Roo
To stay with Zwo.
00;31;11;02 - 00;31;47;12
Roo
Solely based on the fact that the ASI air you know compatibility, because many pieces can be purchased for under $200 now, on Amazon. And I don't need to tell you that an ASI air cost significantly more than $200 now. So, I mean, I was looking on Amazon earlier today and there was a Ryzen five mini PC with 16GB of Ram and 512GB of M2 storage, which is, you know, the fastest kind of storage there is, for $175.
00;31;47;12 - 00;31;51;18
Roo
I mean, that's half the price of an ASI Air plus.
00;31;51;21 - 00;31;52;27
Roo
And it had five.
00;31;52;27 - 00;32;00;12
Roo
USB ports instead of four. It also had a Type-C port. I mean, that's a win win. If you combine something like.
00;32;00;12 - 00;32;01;16
Roo
That with.
00;32;01;16 - 00;32;04;28
Roo
One of these SV Boni power boxes, it opens up.
00;32;04;28 - 00;32;06;05
Roo
Just a whole.
00;32;06;06 - 00;32;15;03
Roo
World of possibilities to you in terms of what you can do. With your imaging set up. Because if you install Nina.
00;32;15;05 - 00;32;16;15
Roo
And you.
00;32;16;15 - 00;32;28;29
Roo
You have a situation where you've got like, a peer or, you know, you don't have to have a peer by any means, like, especially with a mini PC, they're not that much bigger than an AC. Yeah. I mean, you could you could figure it out.
00;32;28;29 - 00;32;30;16
Roo
Trust me.
00;32;30;19 - 00;32;50;18
Roo
But I'm telling you, like, once you really figure out Nina or K stars or whatever you decide to use, you might find that you don't want to go back to the ACA. Especially when you can, like, sit, sit at your desktop computer and control your entire rig from, like, a screen that was actually made.
00;32;50;19 - 00;32;51;02
Roo
To be.
00;32;51;02 - 00;33;03;26
Roo
Used on a desktop computer. Like, I know that there are workarounds. We've talked about them on this show. To be able to use the ACA on windows with, you know, BlueStacks or any other combination of things.
00;33;03;28 - 00;33;04;22
Roo
But to.
00;33;04;22 - 00;33;05;25
Roo
Natively.
00;33;05;25 - 00;33;07;03
Roo
Run a.
00;33;07;03 - 00;33;23;16
Roo
Remote windows PC, it's just a little bit different, and especially if you're working remotely, you know, like, I was talking to Parrish for example, he's got, a rig down at, remote observatory down in Texas.
00;33;23;19 - 00;33;25;17
Roo
And it's just the name of.
00;33;25;17 - 00;33;47;18
Roo
It always escapes me. And it has, like, the simplest name ever, star front observatories. I don't know why I can never remember that. But anyway, he's got a rig down there and what he did it is really smart. So he actually invested a little bit more in a more powerful, mini PC that runs his rig down there, and he has.
00;33;47;18 - 00;33;50;12
Roo
That computer do all of the.
00;33;50;12 - 00;33;54;19
Roo
Stacking for him after the images come in, and then sends the.
00;33;54;19 - 00;33;57;16
Roo
Finished bits files home.
00;33;57;16 - 00;34;17;24
Roo
To his machine where he can process them in pix insight. So I mean, why generate all that heat and use all that energy at his house when he's paying for that spot and energy use? You know, over at star front? You know what I mean? So there are a lot of different, options that are available out there for very affordable prices.
00;34;17;24 - 00;34;32;05
Roo
I think a lot of times people think to themselves, like, I'm going to stay with the AC air because you know, they're affordable, they're very small and they're easy to use. Okay. Those are great arguments. And I'm not going to disagree with you on any of them.
00;34;32;08 - 00;34;34;14
Roo
But many pieces.
00;34;34;14 - 00;34;50;18
Roo
Are more affordable now depending on what you want to get. Obviously you can spend significantly more than what you would spend on an AC or plus if you wanted to go that route. But like I said, our Ryzen five with 16 gigs of Ram.
00;34;50;21 - 00;34;51;00
Roo
And a.
00;34;51;00 - 00;35;02;28
Roo
Five 12 gigabyte SSD for $175 that can handle any observatory software that you can throw at it, and then some. And I'm sure it can handle stacking, too.
00;35;03;24 - 00;35;21;02
Roo
So there that takes out the the price, you know, argument that's out the window, because that's 150 bucks cheaper than an AC air plus, right? Okay. They're small okay. Yeah I'll give you that. They're definitely small. They're the size of a Raspberry Pi. They're all solid computers.
00;35;21;04 - 00;35;22;01
Roo
But.
00;35;22;03 - 00;35;39;29
Roo
These mini pieces aren't that much bigger. I mean, if you've ever seen, like, a mac mini, they're about the same size. Is that so? You're talking about, you know, a really small square, usually like four inches by four inches by two inches. So depending on which one you get, obviously some are smaller, but most of them.
00;35;40;02 - 00;35;40;10
Roo
Have.
00;35;40;10 - 00;35;46;07
Roo
A footprint that's, you know, no bigger than a two inch, well, maybe a little bit bigger than a two inch filter case.
00;35;46;07 - 00;35;47;09
Roo
But not.
00;35;47;09 - 00;36;07;07
Roo
Much bigger. Then I'm trying to look for something comparable around here. I can't say a mini Simpsons TV that wouldn't work. Not much bigger than your cell phone. I think that would be a fair argument to make. If you've got like an iPhone Pro Max. Anyway, they're very, very affordable. They're very, very small and they're very, very powerful.
00;36;07;13 - 00;36;12;14
Roo
They usually have more ports on them. And you will get with an AC air.
00;36;12;20 - 00;36;13;01
Roo
And if.
00;36;13;01 - 00;36;17;14
Roo
You combine them with something like the SB Boni power box.
00;36;17;17 - 00;36;17;23
Roo
That.
00;36;17;23 - 00;36;23;25
Roo
Man, you just you have yourself a winning combination that can run any software that you want to throw at.
00;36;23;25 - 00;36;24;07
Roo
It.
00;36;24;09 - 00;36;35;18
Roo
And then that opens up that whole world of possibilities to you in terms of what camera you want to use, what autofocus or you want to use. Heck, what, mount you want to use? Do you want to.
00;36;35;18 - 00;36;36;05
Roo
Use.
00;36;36;08 - 00;36;41;22
Roo
DSLR or mirrorless cameras? I remember, seeing someone on the.
00;36;41;24 - 00;36;42;19
Roo
Zwo.
00;36;42;19 - 00;37;01;06
Roo
Facebook page the other day. They were complaining because they couldn't get a straight answer from someone. If the, I think it was the R6 Mark two, they couldn't get an answer as to whether or not it was compatible. And obviously, you know, I don't blame zwo like, they don't have all those cameras. They can't possibly test every single one of them.
00;37;01;09 - 00;37;17;05
Roo
But, I mean, it's still a downside, right? If you can't test it, then you don't know. So who wants to go out and spend all this money on something, not knowing if it's going to work with your camera or not? Whereas, you know, you can pretty much guarantee that Nina is going to work with anything that you can throw at it.
00;37;17;05 - 00;37;25;16
Roo
So just something to consider. You know, if you're thinking about, setting up a semi-permanent rig or maybe like something that you.
00;37;25;19 - 00;37;26;03
Roo
Take out.
00;37;26;03 - 00;37;41;15
Roo
Of your garage and put back in every night in the same spot, consider setting up a mini PC, because I know that's certainly what's going to be going down to star front observatories in the springtime when I make that trip. And I would encourage you to do it as well, because.
00;37;41;17 - 00;37;41;26
Roo
As.
00;37;41;27 - 00;37;53;02
Roo
Awesome as that, SV Ebony EAF is going to be, I can almost guarantee you it's not going to work with the AC. And that's a real shame.
00;37;53;04 - 00;37;57;28
Roo
It's time for social media Stardust.
00;37;58;03 - 00;38;01;08
Roo
All right guys, you heard it here. First, we have.
00;38;01;08 - 00;38;02;13
Roo
A, new.
00;38;02;13 - 00;38;05;24
Roo
Segment on the Astro cast. We're going to be doing this.
00;38;05;26 - 00;38;09;00
Roo
Once a week, so it's going to be.
00;38;09;03 - 00;38;11;12
Roo
Every week. I'm planning on doing this.
00;38;11;12 - 00;38;14;03
Roo
And I got the idea.
00;38;14;07 - 00;38;16;28
Roo
After last week's episode when we.
00;38;16;28 - 00;38;21;08
Roo
Talked about, Raj and the.
00;38;21;08 - 00;38;34;27
Roo
Great Fiasco. That was him, you know, gallivanting about and talking about how incredible his astrophotography is and how he had finished astrophotography, etc., etc.. I thought to myself.
00;38;35;00 - 00;38;37;05
Roo
What is a way that we could do.
00;38;37;05 - 00;38;43;00
Roo
Something similar that will help engage the astrophotography community a bit.
00;38;43;00 - 00;38;45;12
Roo
More? But maybe.
00;38;45;13 - 00;38;48;10
Roo
Highlight some more positive things instead of,
00;38;48;12 - 00;38;48;25
Roo
Such.
00;38;49;02 - 00;38;57;06
Roo
Negativity like we saw. And now, don't get me wrong, there's a lot of positivity that came out of the memes and all the hilarity that ensued after he.
00;38;57;08 - 00;38;59;25
Roo
Did what he did.
00;38;59;28 - 00;39;02;02
Roo
But that's neither here nor there for this process.
00;39;02;02 - 00;39;06;29
Roo
So what I'd like to do is I'd like to basically.
00;39;06;29 - 00;39;14;10
Roo
When I'm flipping through social media, whether it be Facebook or Reddit or Instagram anywhere.
00;39;14;10 - 00;39;18;07
Roo
Basically, occasionally I will see.
00;39;18;09 - 00;39;30;17
Roo
A piece of art or a, deep sky object or nebula or whatever it is that really catches my eye. And I want to make that basically the the highlighted object for the week.
00;39;30;19 - 00;39;31;21
Roo
And it doesn't.
00;39;31;21 - 00;39;32;18
Roo
Necessarily have to.
00;39;32;18 - 00;39;33;21
Roo
Be just.
00;39;33;21 - 00;39;42;24
Roo
One thing. It could be three things. You know, if I happen to see three really awesome photos from three different people, then we'll highlight all three of them. And the plan.
00;39;42;24 - 00;39;44;22
Roo
Is, to to share.
00;39;44;22 - 00;39;52;02
Roo
This information, obviously, because I would love for when we, you know, talk about these people's work. For them to hear me talking about it.
00;39;52;02 - 00;39;52;18
Roo
On the show.
00;39;52;18 - 00;39;54;01
Roo
So if you happen to.
00;39;54;01 - 00;39;55;06
Roo
Know any.
00;39;55;06 - 00;39;56;22
Roo
Of the creators,
00;39;56;24 - 00;39;58;01
Roo
Who do.
00;39;58;02 - 00;40;05;27
Roo
Make this work, please feel free to tag them and let them know that we're discussing their artwork on the Astro cast, so they can hear about.
00;40;05;27 - 00;40;12;03
Roo
It and what we'll do at the end of a one year period.
00;40;12;06 - 00;40;12;29
Roo
I'm going to go.
00;40;12;29 - 00;40;16;25
Roo
Back and we will basically take a vote.
00;40;16;25 - 00;40;18;13
Roo
From the community.
00;40;18;15 - 00;40;19;27
Roo
And we will.
00;40;19;28 - 00;40;21;00
Roo
Tally up and.
00;40;21;00 - 00;40;24;14
Roo
See who gets the most votes.
00;40;24;16 - 00;40;25;17
Roo
On having the.
00;40;25;17 - 00;40;26;03
Roo
Best.
00;40;26;06 - 00;40;38;24
Roo
Image amongst all of the images that we collect over the year through the social media Stardust campaign. And whichever one gets, you know, the best response.
00;40;38;27 - 00;40;39;04
Roo
Will.
00;40;39;04 - 00;40;43;12
Roo
Win our prize at the end of the year. So we're going to start with just a $100 prize, and then I'll.
00;40;43;12 - 00;40;44;02
Roo
See.
00;40;44;05 - 00;41;00;20
Roo
If we can get some of the, sponsors to throw in some additional incentives as well. And I'm sure I can come up with a cool trophy. So I'm thinking something like the Captain Cumulus Cup or something along those lines.
00;41;00;22 - 00;41;03;00
Roo
And I would love for.
00;41;03;00 - 00;41;07;27
Roo
Everyone out there, all, all of you listening to participate as well.
00;41;08;00 - 00;41;08;06
Roo
I.
00;41;08;06 - 00;41;12;03
Roo
Obviously don't see everything on the internet. So if you see.
00;41;12;03 - 00;41;13;14
Roo
Something that.
00;41;13;14 - 00;41;20;17
Roo
Really catches your eyes from one of the, you know, astrophotography for beginners communities or learning astrophotography.
00;41;20;17 - 00;41;23;03
Roo
Or, you know, any of the, I guess you would.
00;41;23;03 - 00;41;25;05
Roo
Say like non a pod level.
00;41;25;05 - 00;41;26;02
Roo
Because the.
00;41;26;02 - 00;41;30;27
Roo
Idea here is not everyone is going to win in a.
00;41;30;27 - 00;41;32;00
Roo
Pod, and.
00;41;32;00 - 00;41;42;04
Roo
That's okay. I would love to still highlight people's work that clearly put a lot of effort and thought into their work and, you know, make.
00;41;42;04 - 00;41;43;13
Roo
Them feel special.
00;41;43;13 - 00;41;45;16
Roo
For a moment. So that's kind of the idea.
00;41;45;16 - 00;41;46;08
Roo
So if.
00;41;46;08 - 00;41;47;21
Roo
You see something like that and you.
00;41;47;21 - 00;41;48;24
Roo
Feel that it.
00;41;48;24 - 00;41;50;11
Roo
Is worth mentioning.
00;41;50;16 - 00;41;50;27
Roo
Please.
00;41;50;27 - 00;41;52;25
Roo
Feel free, to tag me.
00;41;53;07 - 00;41;55;13
Roo
You can just use hashtag the Astro.
00;41;55;13 - 00;41;58;06
Roo
Cast and hashtag social.
00;41;58;06 - 00;42;04;27
Roo
Media Stardust. I will be doing a search for those every week. You can obviously post on the.
00;42;04;29 - 00;42;05;09
Roo
Astro.
00;42;05;09 - 00;42;22;11
Roo
Cast Facebook page. You can share anything there that you find. And I think it's going to be a lot of fun. This isn't limited to like just Patreon members or anything like that. Anybody can get in on this. If you've got an image that you really like that you took yourself and you want me to check it out, by all means tag me on it.
00;42;22;13 - 00;42;34;10
Roo
And if you know it catches my eye, then I'll include you in the list. And there's no, minimum number of photos each week. So if there's a dozen awesome photos one week, I will call out each and every single one of them.
00;42;34;10 - 00;42;35;12
Roo
So we'll see.
00;42;35;12 - 00;42;39;04
Roo
How it goes. Hopefully it'll be successful. I think it will.
00;42;39;04 - 00;42;42;09
Roo
So the only thing, that I still have.
00;42;42;09 - 00;42;43;20
Roo
To figure out, it's a little bit.
00;42;43;20 - 00;42;48;11
Roo
Tricky is most of the, private.
00;42;48;17 - 00;42;52;14
Roo
Groups for astrophotography on Facebook. They don't.
00;42;52;14 - 00;42;55;16
Roo
Let, pages join them.
00;42;55;16 - 00;43;02;28
Roo
So, like, the Astro cast page on Facebook. Can't join astrophotography for beginners, for example.
00;43;03;00 - 00;43;03;14
Roo
Because what.
00;43;03;14 - 00;43;04;26
Roo
Would be ideal is if.
00;43;04;26 - 00;43;05;29
Roo
I could, you know.
00;43;05;29 - 00;43;27;26
Roo
If I saw an image on there that I really liked, I could share it to the Astro cast page and say, this is this week's, you know, social media Stardust winner or something along those lines, but I'll figure out the details of that later. For now, I can see everybody's name and where they posted it and those sorts of things, and that's good enough for us to get by and reach out to someone, if and when they win.
00;43;27;26 - 00;43;35;28
Roo
So all that being said, we'll keep it pretty simple for the first week, so we'll just, stick with one photo.
00;43;36;01 - 00;43;37;01
Roo
Though it is a.
00;43;37;01 - 00;43;56;28
Roo
Combination of photos and that it's a, it's a panorama and man, oh, man, this one caught my eye, last night, actually, when I was, sitting outside under the stars, I was kind of flipping through and happened to see it, and man, oh, man, is it a really, really.
00;43;56;28 - 00;43;58;18
Roo
Well done,
00;43;58;21 - 00;44;20;00
Roo
Landscape Milky Way photo, which are always some of my personal favorites. So it definitely appears to be from the southern hemisphere, based on the fact that I can see the large and small Magellanic Cloud off to the east there. Man, just absolutely beautiful and just really, really makes me want to go down and see some southern skies.
00;44;20;00 - 00;44;26;13
Roo
But it's going to be, on the astrophotography for beginners page.
00;44;26;15 - 00;44;28;02
Roo
One Christy.
00;44;28;03 - 00;44;37;14
Roo
Thomas from Myrna Payne's Bay Great Ocean Road is the name of the post. It's a panoramic photo.
00;44;37;14 - 00;44;38;18
Roo
It's got.
00;44;38;20 - 00;44;39;26
Roo
Water of the bay.
00;44;39;26 - 00;44;42;02
Roo
And then it looks like some kind of.
00;44;42;02 - 00;45;03;09
Roo
Mountains in the foreground. It's it's extremely beautiful. And I will, one way or another, I will post it to the Astro cast page and give, the artist credit, obviously. But I don't know this person. I don't know anything about him. I did look at their profile. They're definitely a real person. They appear to be from Australia.
00;45;03;11 - 00;45;13;24
Roo
They're in the Milky Way. Panoramas. I really, really dig it. It's an amazing picture. They they showed great technique, really, really great saturation control. They didn't overdo.
00;45;13;24 - 00;45;14;07
Roo
It.
00;45;14;09 - 00;45;19;23
Roo
And they could have believe me, because when you look at this image, you can tell that there is enough.
00;45;19;23 - 00;45;20;16
Roo
Detail.
00;45;20;16 - 00;45;24;20
Roo
From the darkness of the sky there where if they wanted to, they could have really.
00;45;24;20 - 00;45;26;28
Roo
Pushed this, but they didn't.
00;45;26;28 - 00;45;41;13
Roo
They showed some restraint and they let the beauty of the Milky Way sing. And I think that is ultimately what makes it, a really, really beautiful image. So congratulations to you, Christy. I hope that you hear this. Hopefully somebody who.
00;45;41;13 - 00;45;43;26
Roo
Knows you will tell you about this.
00;45;43;29 - 00;45;46;26
Roo
And, you know, action needed on your part.
00;45;46;29 - 00;45;47;17
Roo
If you if.
00;45;47;17 - 00;46;12;07
Roo
You want, at the end of the year, I will let you know and reach out to you. So thank you. So much. And, keep up the great work down there in Australia, man. Amazing shot that you got. So yeah, big, big congratulations to Christy Thomas on being our first winner for her social media Stardust. And hopefully when we tabulate them all up at the end of the year, we'll have quite a few and honorable mentions and all that kind of good stuff.
00;46;12;13 - 00;46;14;10
Roo
And I really hope that the.
00;46;14;12 - 00;46;15;01
Roo
The community.
00;46;15;01 - 00;46;25;17
Roo
Will get involved in this and send in shots that they love. Send in your own shots. Believe me, you don't have to not just nominate other people. By all means, if you're proud of a shot, send it to me and I will.
00;46;25;20 - 00;46;26;15
Roo
Absolutely.
00;46;26;15 - 00;46;31;26
Roo
Consider it for the week. So, other stuff I have been working on that I thought would.
00;46;31;26 - 00;46;32;23
Roo
Be,
00;46;32;25 - 00;46;37;04
Roo
Worthy of mention. One kind of fun little project.
00;46;37;18 - 00;46;39;06
Roo
That I've been working on lately.
00;46;39;09 - 00;46;41;13
Roo
I've always been a big.
00;46;41;13 - 00;46;49;22
Roo
Fan of DIY stuff, and that extends to computing, obviously, and to a lesser but.
00;46;49;22 - 00;46;50;05
Roo
Still.
00;46;50;05 - 00;46;53;08
Roo
Very much interested degree robotics.
00;46;53;08 - 00;46;55;22
Roo
So I have,
00;46;55;24 - 00;47;05;09
Roo
I bought many Arduino kits over the years and haven't really utilized them to their full potential, I guess you could say.
00;47;05;11 - 00;47;08;20
Roo
And I was thinking about.
00;47;08;23 - 00;47;11;04
Roo
Some of the stuff that I had read about Collimated.
00;47;11;04 - 00;47;12;11
Roo
Mica, and I've.
00;47;12;11 - 00;47;13;27
Roo
Got an area in my.
00;47;13;27 - 00;47;14;26
Roo
House.
00;47;14;29 - 00;47;20;25
Roo
That has a long hallway that the kitchen looks down. And I thought to myself.
00;47;21;01 - 00;47;23;08
Roo
Do I have anything with a.
00;47;23;08 - 00;47;38;16
Roo
Single LED on it? Or I could simulate one star and then set my telescope up all the way back in the kitchen, point it all the way down at that quote unquote star. And that way I would be.
00;47;38;16 - 00;47;39;18
Roo
Able to easily.
00;47;39;18 - 00;48;02;11
Roo
Collimated from, you know, a horizontal surface inside the house. And I realized I didn't have anything with just a single LED in it. And then I started thinking to myself, man, if I got an Arduino kit, it would have a bunch of LEDs on it. And then I was also thinking to myself, one of the benefits would be.
00;48;02;13 - 00;48;03;05
Roo
That I could.
00;48;03;05 - 00;48;10;15
Roo
Potentially use if I got the right kit, like a servo motor to make a motorized.
00;48;10;18 - 00;48;11;03
Roo
Flat.
00;48;11;03 - 00;48;19;28
Roo
Panel. So this is something that's been a, big topic of discussion in the, Patreon, members only discord.
00;48;20;01 - 00;48;20;11
Roo
Group.
00;48;20;11 - 00;48;37;14
Roo
Chat many times, you know, flat panels in general. New member Jason actually mentioned to me wonder Astro. They make a more affordable flat panel. And it's really nice. I actually I might end up ordering one of those.
00;48;37;17 - 00;48;38;03
Roo
But.
00;48;38;03 - 00;48;48;05
Roo
I definitely could see myself, you know, trying to make my own as well. I mean, why not? Right. All you really need is a servo motor to lift something up and down, and then.
00;48;48;07 - 00;48;48;20
Roo
You know, a.
00;48;48;20 - 00;48;52;08
Roo
Few LED lights to give you an evenly lit surface behind.
00;48;52;08 - 00;48;54;26
Roo
It. So I'm going.
00;48;54;26 - 00;49;01;04
Roo
To do that. I don't know how successful I'll be. I do remember the last time I got an Arduino kit, one of the very.
00;49;01;04 - 00;49;02;24
Roo
First,
00;49;02;27 - 00;49;11;02
Roo
Little lessons was with an LED, a single LED, getting it to turn on and off with a button press. If I remember correctly. And lucky.
00;49;11;02 - 00;49;12;05
Roo
For me, that's.
00;49;12;05 - 00;49;14;12
Roo
What I want to do. For column mating, the.
00;49;14;12 - 00;49;15;18
Roo
C8 is.
00;49;15;21 - 00;49;18;17
Roo
Just turning the LED on. So that's going to be,
00;49;18;20 - 00;49;19;05
Roo
Step.
00;49;19;05 - 00;49;34;07
Roo
One. So I'm going to work on kind of my, I guess you would call it a collimation LED, which is basically just going to be an on off switch, for a single LED that I don't know if I can run it off battery power. I suppose we will see.
00;49;34;14 - 00;49;35;05
Roo
It does come.
00;49;35;05 - 00;49;36;27
Roo
With, a battery in.
00;49;36;27 - 00;49;37;19
Roo
The kit.
00;49;37;22 - 00;49;50;15
Roo
And a single LED takes up very, very little power. So I'm thinking that will probably be the best option. And then once I figure all that out, then I can look into possibly starting to make that.
00;49;50;15 - 00;49;52;18
Roo
Actual LED flat.
00;49;52;18 - 00;50;12;17
Roo
Panel that is automated and motorized. I think step one would just be making a decent flat panel myself. So, you know, getting like a, a ring that fits properly around my scope and then, you know, plexiglass or whatever I decide to use, like an opaque white plastic surface and then the LEDs behind.
00;50;12;17 - 00;50;12;24
Roo
It.
00;50;13;00 - 00;50;14;14
Roo
Once I verify that, I can.
00;50;14;14 - 00;50;15;23
Roo
Create good.
00;50;15;23 - 00;50;29;28
Roo
Flats from that, then I could work on possibly militarizing it. But I don't think it would be that hard. And I know that you can. You know, you can purchase motorized flat panels for, you know, 2 to $300.
00;50;29;28 - 00;50;31;14
Roo
But if I could make.
00;50;31;14 - 00;50;36;09
Roo
One myself or even a little bit less, I would much, much, much rather do that.
00;50;36;09 - 00;50;37;13
Roo
So we will.
00;50;37;13 - 00;50;38;18
Roo
See. Time will tell.
00;50;39;24 - 00;50;42;16
Roo
The other thing, that I thought I would mention to you.
00;50;42;16 - 00;50;44;15
Roo
Guys is.
00;50;44;17 - 00;50;48;06
Roo
I know we've talked about, MPB.
00;50;48;08 - 00;50;49;18
Roo
On the show before.
00;50;49;18 - 00;50;51;05
Roo
They are a,
00;50;51;07 - 00;50;51;27
Roo
Like a.
00;50;52;00 - 00;51;02;14
Roo
Used gear company that specializes in camera lenses and cameras. And there are a couple of different companies out there, that do similar things.
00;51;02;16 - 00;51;04;01
Roo
Like, Kia.
00;51;04;03 - 00;51;24;07
Roo
Comes to mind. They're pretty much. Well, they're very, very similar to MPB, but I've used both of them and had good luck with both of them. But I have a, portrait shoot that I have to do in the very near future, with my father in law. And I ordered an 85 millimeter.
00;51;24;09 - 00;51;25;25
Roo
Canon F.
00;51;25;25 - 00;51;32;18
Roo
Lens, for, I think it was $220 in total off of MPB.
00;51;32;21 - 00;51;34;05
Roo
00;51;34;07 - 00;51;47;22
Roo
It ended up, coming. And mind you, there's a few different categories. When you're purchasing gear from them, they have like, you know, bargain or just for parts. And then they have poor quality. Fair.
00;51;47;25 - 00;51;49;03
Roo
Good.
00;51;49;05 - 00;51;50;29
Roo
Excellent. And like.
00;51;50;29 - 00;51;54;29
Roo
New mine was of the good.
00;51;55;01 - 00;51;57;27
Roo
Variety. So I could have gone a whole nother.
00;51;57;27 - 00;52;00;05
Roo
Two steps up to.
00;52;00;05 - 00;52;00;22
Roo
You know.
00;52;00;22 - 00;52;01;12
Roo
Excellent.
00;52;01;12 - 00;52;16;10
Roo
Or like new. And I think it would have been like $294 for one of the like, new ones. And, you know, for me, as long as it works perfectly fine, I don't care if it's a little scuffed up or what have you. So I got the good one.
00;52;16;13 - 00;52;22;19
Roo
It comes in, man. I if you would have told me that this lens was.
00;52;22;19 - 00;52;24;06
Roo
Brand spanking new.
00;52;24;12 - 00;52;26;06
Roo
I would have believed it. It came.
00;52;26;06 - 00;52;28;21
Roo
In the original canon box.
00;52;28;23 - 00;52;29;29
Roo
That had no.
00;52;29;29 - 00;52;37;05
Roo
Dents, scratches, anything on it. And then when I pulled the actual lens out of said box.
00;52;37;08 - 00;52;39;26
Roo
It looks completely brand new.
00;52;39;26 - 00;52;43;27
Roo
Like, I can't imagine a lens looking any better than this.
00;52;43;29 - 00;52;44;23
Roo
So, you.
00;52;44;23 - 00;52;46;07
Roo
Know, like new.
00;52;46;09 - 00;52;47;20
Roo
Versus good, I.
00;52;47;20 - 00;53;07;19
Roo
Don't know. Obviously your mileage may vary. And, you know, I'm not saying every lens that they sell is going to be like brand new. Obviously, that's not going to be the case, but I am telling you that I have had a lot of success with them. This isn't the first time I've purchased gear from them. And it definitely won't be the last time after that.
00;53;07;19 - 00;53;26;04
Roo
So if you if you do need a lens, if you're looking for something, definitely do yourself a favor and check out MPB just because they are, you know, very affordable and, you know, camera gear, lenses in particular, man, they hold their value really, really well. So most of the time, you know, if you.
00;53;26;04 - 00;53;27;07
Roo
Buy a.
00;53;27;07 - 00;53;29;23
Roo
Nice lens and take good care of it.
00;53;29;26 - 00;53;31;24
Roo
You should be able to get most.
00;53;31;24 - 00;53;36;16
Roo
Of your money back if and when you ever need to go. And resell that lens.
00;53;36;18 - 00;53;37;06
Roo
So just keep.
00;53;37;06 - 00;53;46;28
Roo
That in mind when you move forward. Another huge bonus of me. The reason I got the EF version when I have RF, cameras.
00;53;47;01 - 00;53;48;15
Roo
Is because the.
00;53;48;15 - 00;53;57;14
Roo
EF version was $220, whereas the RF version is like $600. And I really only have one project that I'm dying to.
00;53;57;14 - 00;53;58;22
Roo
Use this.
00;53;58;22 - 00;54;03;20
Roo
Lens for, which is like a family portrait situation.
00;54;03;23 - 00;54;06;23
Roo
But as a huge added benefit.
00;54;06;25 - 00;54;07;20
Roo
Now I've got an.
00;54;07;20 - 00;54;09;05
Roo
EF 85.
00;54;09;05 - 00;54;13;29
Roo
Millimeter lens that I can adapt to my Zwo camera, because.
00;54;14;01 - 00;54;14;07
Roo
The.
00;54;14;07 - 00;54;15;13
Roo
Focus within.
00;54;15;13 - 00;54;17;00
Roo
EF glass is.
00;54;17;00 - 00;54;23;00
Roo
All manual. So there's no focus by a wire like you have on all of your RF lenses.
00;54;23;07 - 00;54;23;19
Roo
Which.
00;54;23;19 - 00;54;24;15
Roo
You cannot.
00;54;24;15 - 00;54;26;27
Roo
Adapt to the zwo cameras.
00;54;27;00 - 00;54;27;22
Roo
And because.
00;54;27;22 - 00;54;28;08
Roo
Of that.
00;54;28;15 - 00;54;34;11
Roo
We're able to, you know, adapt it to a Zwo camera. I was looking in Stellarium.
00;54;34;13 - 00;54;35;06
Roo
And.
00;54;35;06 - 00;54;49;06
Roo
It's going to really frame up Barnard's Loop extremely well. So you can get Barnard's Loop, Orion, the Horsehead and Flame, and you can even get the, the Witch Head Nebula in that same, frame if you.
00;54;49;09 - 00;54;49;23
Roo
You know, take.
00;54;49;23 - 00;54;54;13
Roo
Your time. And obviously, we were talking about this on Saturday night in the group chat.
00;54;54;15 - 00;54;55;24
Roo
You had.
00;54;55;26 - 00;55;09;06
Roo
Most likely have to do an HDR composition if you wanted to, you know, not completely blow Orion out and get the Witch's Head Nebula in there. But, hey, I got all winter to mess around with it and find out, so.
00;55;09;08 - 00;55;09;26
Roo
I'll let you.
00;55;09;26 - 00;55;11;23
Roo
Know, when that time does.
00;55;11;23 - 00;55;12;21
Roo
Come,
00;55;12;24 - 00;55;14;23
Roo
How things go, when I get.
00;55;14;23 - 00;55;16;09
Roo
There. I haven't.
00;55;16;09 - 00;55;18;03
Roo
Decided yet if we're going to have, like,
00;55;18;06 - 00;55;19;08
Roo
A pod.
00;55;19;12 - 00;55;20;19
Roo
Kind of name.
00;55;20;19 - 00;55;22;26
Roo
For the, social media.
00;55;22;26 - 00;55;27;02
Roo
Stardust. I don't even know if I'll keep that as the name. I just thought it sounded cool.
00;55;27;04 - 00;55;28;27
Roo
Maybe we'll go Apple.
00;55;28;29 - 00;55;32;15
Roo
Astro pod or Astro cast picture of the week.
00;55;32;17 - 00;55;35;19
Roo
The apple with the app will be good. If you've got.
00;55;35;19 - 00;55;37;01
Roo
Ideas for names.
00;55;37;01 - 00;55;37;21
Roo
Please.
00;55;37;21 - 00;55;38;17
Roo
Email them to.
00;55;38;17 - 00;55;39;10
Roo
Me.
00;55;39;12 - 00;55;42;18
Roo
Send them to at the Astro cast.com.
00;55;42;20 - 00;55;44;06
Roo
And, if I pick it, I.
00;55;44;06 - 00;55;59;27
Roo
Will let you know and I will give you the honor of, naming you on the show as the chooser of the name. And the jingle took me all of ten minutes to make. So not a very difficult thing if I have to make another one. So by all means, if you think you've got a better name, please let me know.
00;55;59;27 - 00;56;04;01
Roo
But for now, we'll stick with that and, we'll see how it goes. So.
00;56;04;03 - 00;56;10;01
Roo
All right, let us talk about some recommendations. And boy, oh boy.
00;56;10;02 - 00;56;12;01
Roo
Do I got one for you this week.
00;56;12;01 - 00;56;14;23
Roo
So I, I don't read.
00;56;14;23 - 00;56;19;24
Roo
A ton of nonfiction. I very much enjoy reading fiction.
00;56;19;26 - 00;56;20;05
Roo
But I.
00;56;20;05 - 00;56;34;09
Roo
Do occasionally read nonfiction, like most of you. Probably. Like, I enjoy a good Brian Cox or Neil deGrasse Tyson book. I love reading about, theories and history and these sorts of things. And I also.
00;56;34;17 - 00;56;35;01
Roo
Like a.
00;56;35;01 - 00;56;37;26
Roo
Lot of you probably do enjoy reading about.
00;56;38;03 - 00;56;38;09
Roo
The.
00;56;38;09 - 00;56;40;10
Roo
Future and what may come.
00;56;40;16 - 00;56;44;22
Roo
One day. And whilst, flipping.
00;56;44;22 - 00;56;47;12
Roo
Through audible, I happened to.
00;56;47;12 - 00;56;49;14
Roo
Catch a title which.
00;56;49;14 - 00;56;50;14
Roo
I had seen.
00;56;50;14 - 00;56;52;20
Roo
Before.
00;56;52;22 - 00;57;00;08
Roo
But I recently had, I think I heard a review for it on NPR or something along those lines, and.
00;57;00;10 - 00;57;02;17
Roo
It caught my eye and.
00;57;02;19 - 00;57;08;12
Roo
I just said, what the heck, I'm going to get it. I think I had two credits sitting at audible anyway, and I just decided.
00;57;08;12 - 00;57;09;15
Roo
To, to.
00;57;09;22 - 00;57;14;10
Roo
You know, kind of roll the dice on it. I am super glad that I.
00;57;14;10 - 00;57;16;17
Roo
Did, because this book.
00;57;16;17 - 00;57;18;20
Roo
Has been.
00;57;18;22 - 00;57;21;28
Roo
One of, if not the best.
00;57;22;00 - 00;57;23;27
Roo
Nonfiction titles.
00;57;23;27 - 00;57;26;10
Roo
I've ever, quote unquote.
00;57;26;11 - 00;57;42;00
Roo
Read or listened to. So first of all, it's, it's a short read. So if you do pick it up as a physical book and want to read it or read it on your Kindle, it shouldn't take you that long. It's only a six hour listen on audible, which is very brief.
00;57;42;02 - 00;57;42;26
Roo
By book.
00;57;42;26 - 00;57;58;12
Roo
Standards. You know, most novels are, you know, anywhere from 12 to 24 hours or more. So it is a brief listen, but that's not to say it is not a deep and engaging listen because it very, very much is that.
00;57;58;14 - 00;58;05;18
Roo
The title of the book is called. If anyone builds it, everyone dies. Why?
00;58;05;18 - 00;58;06;21
Roo
Superhuman?
00;58;06;21 - 00;58;10;21
Roo
I would kill us all by,
00;58;10;23 - 00;58;16;29
Roo
Forgive me if I botch the name Eliezer Yoda Boesky and Nate Suarez.
00;58;17;02 - 00;58;19;02
Roo
This book is.
00;58;19;04 - 00;58;20;28
Roo
Incredible.
00;58;21;01 - 00;58;21;16
Roo
And not.
00;58;21;16 - 00;58;23;02
Roo
Only is it incredible, but.
00;58;23;02 - 00;58;24;09
Roo
It's actually.
00;58;24;09 - 00;58;26;07
Roo
Quite, incredibly terrifying.
00;58;26;07 - 00;58;36;02
Roo
Because these two lay out in very, very plausible, realistic terms why we are.
00;58;36;02 - 00;58;41;28
Roo
Absolutely barreling towards a future where we create.
00;58;41;29 - 00;58;42;28
Roo
A.
00;58;43;01 - 00;58;44;13
Roo
Superhuman AI.
00;58;44;13 - 00;58;47;10
Roo
That will, without a doubt.
00;58;47;13 - 00;58;48;29
Roo
Destroy us all.
00;58;49;01 - 00;58;52;23
Roo
And, if you don't believe me, just listen to the book.
00;58;52;23 - 00;58;59;11
Roo
And try to make a counter argument. And if you can think of one, they've probably already thought of it.
00;58;59;13 - 00;59;02;00
Roo
The premise is that.
00;59;02;03 - 00;59;22;19
Roo
Essentially, without spoiling anything, the way AI is a work now, which I kind of knew, but I didn't really know know until I listened to this book. I knew that no one really understood how AI's work, but I didn't really fundamentally understand why no one understood. The reason is AIS are not.
00;59;22;21 - 00;59;30;11
Roo
Built. We don't build AIS. We don't code AIS. We actually grow a.
00;59;30;11 - 00;59;35;15
Roo
AIS through a process known as, gradient descent.
00;59;35;18 - 00;59;37;18
Roo
And, I won't get too.
00;59;37;18 - 00;59;39;26
Roo
In-Depth, but they do.
00;59;39;28 - 00;59;42;04
Roo
Give a single.
00;59;42;04 - 00;59;44;24
Roo
Scenario that is one of.
00;59;44;24 - 00;59;47;04
Roo
The most common and.
00;59;47;04 - 00;59;48;20
Roo
Honestly, probably one of the.
00;59;48;20 - 00;59;50;21
Roo
Most positive possible.
00;59;50;21 - 00;59;54;03
Roo
Outcomes with building an AI.
00;59;54;05 - 00;59;56;04
Roo
And, yeah, it.
00;59;56;04 - 00;59;58;25
Roo
Does not it does not end up well for us.
00;59;58;25 - 01;00;00;19
Roo
So highly, highly.
01;00;00;19 - 01;00;19;26
Roo
Highly recommend listening to this one. It's if nothing else, it's incredibly entertaining and it will leave you terrified. The the real crazy thing is, since we grow these things and don't build them, we really don't have any way of knowing.
01;00;19;28 - 01;00;21;02
Roo
How close.
01;00;21;02 - 01;00;45;16
Roo
Or far away we are to creating, superhuman intelligence. We we don't know. We don't know what we don't know. What's going to happen is essentially, one day we will cross that threshold, and we likely won't even know when that is. And when that happens, it's already too late. So listen to the book. Let me know what you thought of it.
01;00;45;18 - 01;00;47;00
Roo
You know, feel free to shoot me.
01;00;47;00 - 01;00;47;12
Roo
An.
01;00;47;15 - 01;00;53;18
Roo
Email or leave a message on, Facebook. Ask your cast page. I would certainly love to hear from you.
01;00;53;18 - 01;00;54;17
Roo
But it's.
01;00;54;18 - 01;00;59;11
Roo
It's really, really good, y'all. It's a great book, and I can't recommend it enough.
01;00;59;13 - 01;01;00;27
Roo
It's scary stuff.
01;01;00;27 - 01;01;25;18
Roo
And, I, I totally agree with pretty much the entire argument that the author makes. I've had a lot of mixed feelings about AI, for the last few years, and this is, helping solidify them to be less mixed. So the other, fun recommendation that I can give you, not that listening to that book isn't fun because it is a very entertaining listen.
01;01;25;20 - 01;01;28;01
Roo
But I know I mentioned.
01;01;28;03 - 01;01;32;07
Roo
Silksong before. Let me just,
01;01;32;09 - 01;01;45;17
Roo
One more time say, man, oh, man, that is my game of the year. Without a doubt. I am well over 100 hours into it now. I'm in the final.
01;01;45;17 - 01;01;47;12
Roo
Act of the game.
01;01;47;15 - 01;01;53;18
Roo
I won't give any spoilers, but that's not something that becomes super obvious to you unless you've played it.
01;01;54;25 - 01;02;05;14
Roo
It's if you enjoy, like super Metroid or Metroid Mania is what they call it type games. There has never been a better Metroid Vanilla.
01;02;05;15 - 01;02;06;23
Roo
Made.
01;02;06;25 - 01;02;17;27
Roo
Than Silksong. So do yourself a favor. If you haven't yet, give it a play. I would highly encourage anyone who hasn't played it yet to go back and play a Hollow Knight first.
01;02;17;29 - 01;02;18;08
Roo
You know.
01;02;18;08 - 01;02;28;11
Roo
You can beat that game in probably 20 hours, and it's a phenomenal game in its own right. It's very, very good. Silksong is better, no doubt about it. But Hollow Knight will kind.
01;02;28;11 - 01;02;29;10
Roo
Of,
01;02;29;12 - 01;02;33;13
Roo
Give you the prequel info that you need to truly appreciate Silksong.
01;02;33;13 - 01;02;34;19
Roo
And it will.
01;02;34;19 - 01;02;38;18
Roo
Get you used to the incredibly difficult combat because man oh man, it is a.
01;02;38;18 - 01;02;40;00
Roo
Tough game that you will.
01;02;40;00 - 01;02;46;00
Roo
Die a million times in, but it's just so satisfying when you finally deliver that killing blow.
01;02;46;02 - 01;02;48;07
Roo
To the boss that is, you know, beat it 50.
01;02;48;07 - 01;02;49;00
Roo
Times in a row.
01;02;49;00 - 01;02;53;05
Roo
So that is, going to do it for this week.
01;02;53;05 - 01;03;01;16
Roo
